The President of the Generalitat, Quim Torra, not only receives criticism from professionals who are at the forefront in the fight against the coronavirus, but also from his own party.
The mayor of Igualada, Marc Castells, of Junts per Catalunya, asked those in charge in Torra’s government “to charge their batteries. People can’t have the feeling that we’ve been locked up and thrown away. “
The Generalitat ordered the confinement of Igualada and three neighboring municipalities, where 70,000 people live. They accumulate 10% of deaths from coronavirus in Catalonia. They feel like they are in the ghetto.
“We do not understand that we are in a situation of such high mortality and nobody comes to do the tests. It is inadmissible, ”Castells said in a message to the press this Friday. Castells is a leading figure in Torra’s party. In the previous mandate, he presided over the Barcelona Provincial Council.
Castells demanded that 20,000 of the 50,000 tests of covid-19 that the Generalitat expects to receive in the next few hours be destined for the Igualada area.
They ask the Army for help
From Catalan nursing homes, no criticism of the management of Torra is spared. The business associations of the sector warn about the increase of contagion in the centers, the high mortality and, also, about the lack of personnel. Some border on a situation of neglect. The management of various nursing homes has asked for help from the Army’s Emergency Military Unit (UME).
Igualada is also one of the most affected areas. Two nursing homes in Capellades and Olesa de Montserrat, close to Igualada although outside the confinement area, accumulate 25 deaths.
The Mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, demanded from Torra a plan of “intervention” of public nursing homes or with concerted places in view of the danger that they may be neglected. Part of its staff has become ill, is in preventive isolation or has requested discharge.
Colau reminded Torra that 25% of those who died in Barcelona were inmates of nursing homes. She insisted that he is not correctly managing the powers of the Generalitat, among which is the control of nursing homes. He defended the work of the military in the disinfection of assistance centers.
The mayor was outraged: “I do not understand that Torra spends all day talking about total confinement” without solving the chaos of the nursing homes. She criticized Torra for focusing the debate on “Madrid does everything wrong, Catalonia does everything right”.
According to data from the Generalitat, in Catalan nursing homes, just over 300 cases have been registered until Friday, out of a population of 64,000. However, the data does not match that of the unions in the sector.
