The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, held a telephone conversation this Saturday with his US counterpart, Joe Biden, in which they agreed to use the Morón and Rota military bases to temporarily host Afghan collaborators of the United States in transit to other countries.

In their telephone conversation, which lasted about 25 minutes, both leaders shared their concern about the current situation in the Asian country and agreed on “the need for the international community to act in a coordinated and supportive manner, especially to facilitate evacuation and repatriation operations”, as stated by the Presidency of the Spanish Government.

Similarly, Sánchez has informed Biden that Spain continues to work “closely” with its international allies in the evacuation of the most “vulnerable” Afghans, and has informed him of the mechanism that Spain has put in place to act as ‘hub’ of the External Action Service of the European Union.

Through this mechanism, citizens of Afghanistan who have collaborated with the European Union and other personnel who have been at the service of the European institutions will arrive in Spain.

“Sánchez and Biden have reaffirmed their willingness to continue cooperating closely in order to continue facilitating the evacuation operations in Afghanistán,” the Spanish Presidency included in said statement.

Thus, the Government of Spain has taken as “proof of the excellent collaboration” between both nations the fact that this Saturday a Spanish plane landed at the Torrejón air base in which 64 Afghan evacuees collaborating with the United States flew.

Sánchez has published a message through his social networks in which he has described as “fruitful” the telephone conversation that he has had with Biden, in which they have been able to address various topics of “common interest.”

For its part, and in an additional statement, the White House added that both leaders “praised the dedication of their staff in Kabul, as well as their joint work to safely evacuate their citizens, the Afghans who bravely supported the work of the EU and other vulnerable Afghan citizens”.

“President Biden praised Spain’s leadership in seeking international support for Afghan women and girls“, the US Administration’s note has riveted.

This would be the second contact that Sánchez has with his American counterpart after the brief talk that took place during the meeting of NATO Heads of State and Government.
