That’s how it went
Argentina 75 95 Spain
Spain won Argentina by 95-75 in the final of the 2019 Basketball World Cup. Sergio Scariolo’s boys won gold in a match they dominated from start to finish. Nothing of the scares and the agonizing extensions that lived in the semifinal against Australia. The fatigue did not make a dent in the selection after two weeks of tournament; or, if so, it was not noticed this Sunday in Beijing.
This afternoon was the tenth final for Spain of a great tournament since 1999. The first without Pau Gasol in the group, although the 2006 lived from the bench and on crutches. In the three previous absences of the totem in 20 years (2005, 2010 and 2013) only one bronze fell. Since gold in Japan 2006, 13 years ago, the Spanish team has only missed the podium twice in the big tournaments: in the 2010 World Cup, Teodosic’s triple; and in 2014, that of the hit against France. At this time: four golds, three silver and three bronzes in 12 championships. Argentina, champion in the first edition of the tournament in 1950, returned to the final 17 years after the silver in Indianapolis against the last Yugoslavia.
