Catalan Regional Minister of Business in the 2017 legislature Santi Vila, in an article in La Vanguardia, asks for a pardon for imprisoned pro-independentist politicians despite admitting that “what happened in Catalonia in 2017 must be recognized as inappropriate for a mature and advanced liberal democracy. I carry the sorrow in myself and I fear that it will always accompany me “.
“As true as that, as stated by the magistrates who handed down a sentence to the Supreme Court, that was an undeniable political case, which should never have reached the courts,” he adds. For Vila “more than three years in prison is enough time to prove the punishment and the seriousness of the events.”
“The politicians and activists imprisoned in the process must be pardoned. And the nineteenth-century crime of sedition, which no one understands in Europe, reformed. The convicted must recognize that we erred in many of the decisions taken and we must commit ourselves to reconciliation,” he says.
He also considers that “in Catalonia it is urgent to restore the constitutional consensus broken at least since 2010, trying to recover almost half of Catalans convinced that being Catalan and at the same time Spanish is once again impossible. “
