The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, responds to ERC senator Mirella Cortès, seated to his left Europa Press
The Prime Minister will go to Barcelona tomorrow to participate in the dialogue table “with the best of attitudes”, but called on the Catalan Government “to do the same”, recognizing, for example, the diversity of society, that is why, and more after “the news that we have heard in Catalonia today”, in reference to the confrontation between the two parts of the Government, ERC and Junts, about who has to be at that table, he invited the independentists to “promote a table of dialogue between independentists and non-independentists “. “Or is it that they are afraid of something?”
The debate between the ERC senator and the President of the Government was not the one it should be between those who tomorrow will sit at a table in which it is intended to channel a dialogue for so many years broken between the Government of the Generalitat and the Executiveof the State.
The ERC senator sees only one solution, the referendum and amnesty
But Senator Cortès made things very difficult for Sánchez in her first speech: “Without a referendum there is no solution to the conflict, which they have already recognized exists,” she told him, while making her positions clear: “The independence movement will not disappear or renounce the independence of Catalonia “.
So the ERC representative set the bar high: “for the moment, the only relevant movement” has been that of pardons, she said, “that although they alleviate the situation of some unjustly imprisoned, it does not solve the global cause against independence” .
Cortès demands “an end to the repression” of the independence movement
Mirella Cortès spoke of the majority existing in Catalonia for independence, and to put an “end to the repression”, to insist that “time is running out and if they are not brave now, the right will end up imposing its liberal agenda, and the left will he will ask if he did everything possible or did they just sit down, “and conclude that” tomorrow there is a historic opportunity to address the historical problem between the two governments and seek a solution that involves the referendum on self-determination and amnesty. “
A harsh intervention before which the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, did not remain silent and put his finger where the president of the Generalitat, the division within the Catalan Government, could hurt the most at this time, when Aragonese refused to admit in the table to members of Junts who are not part of their government.
Sánchez calls for self-criticism and that he convene a dialogue table between Catalans
“The news that we have heard in Catalonia today, from both parts of the Catalan Government,” Sánchez began directly in his response, “shows us the path we have to walk,” he said, because the crisis that has been going on for ten years ” It has not only been between the Government of Catalonia and the State, but in Catalan society “.
For this reason, the independentists, in Sánchez’s opinion, should put aside their maximalisms, those that the ERC senator exposed, at the same time that she invited independence “to make self-criticism of what happened in 2017” and of “what you call political conflict. “
The president believes that there are many things to talk about other than the referendum
The President of the Government would be in favor of the fact that if the independentists want to advance in the dialogue, what they should do is “talk about those things that bring us closer”, because if one can only talk about a referendum and amnesty, “it is not dialogue, but imposition”.
Sánchez recovered the demands of Artur Mas and Quim Torra, reflected in 45 points, and as Mariano Rajoy did at the time, the President of the Government assured that if one point is removed, that of the referendum, his Executive is willing to talk about the others 44 “.
GOVERNMENT PRESIDENCY – AGENDA FOR REUNION – 44 points – 15-09-2021
Sánchez warns: “The dialogue will be long, it will not be resolved in two, three or four years”
He did warn that “after what happened today”, referring again to the confrontation between the two parties of the Catalan Government, “we all have to be clear that the dialogue is going to be long, and that to avoid frustrations it is not possible to put a term”. The one that he puts goes beyond his legislature: “What happened in ten years is not going to be resolved in two years, nor in three, nor in four.”
And to begin with, he believes that this self-criticism that demands the independence movement, should be resolved with the commitment that “it will not be possible to violate democratic legality or the Constitution.”
ERC senator insists referendum is the only solution
But Mirella Cortès did not deviate one iota from her demands, because to talk about financing or infrastructure there are other tables and commissions, but the dialogue table is “an opportunity to solve what they are ignoring, that without a referendum there will be no political solution in Catalonia.
