Replacement of Catalan regional ministers Miquel Buch, Mariàngela Villalonga and Àngels Chacón by Miquel Sàmper, Àngels Ponsa and Ramon Tremosa, respectively, has caused public interventions and tweets to circulate on networks which have evidenced that during the years of the Catalan process the most mediatic of the three brand-new regional ministers, the economist and former deputy in the European Parliament Ramon Tremosa.
During his time in the European Parliament, Tremosa took a photo with the former Belgian Prime Minister Elio di Rupo, whom he thanked for “his criticism” of “Rajoy’s authoritarian drift”, but Di Rupo quickly distanced himself from Catalan independence when he replied: ” A Spanish MEP approached me last night. He wanted to take a photo with me. Now he uses it for Spanish political purposes. As necessary, I reaffirm my total opposition to Puigdemont’s attitude. “
In addition, he has spread a false cover of Time as authentic – Catalan pro-referendum protesters appeared where, in reality, a photo of Hong Kong was published-, he tagged the image of a protester facing the Chilean police as if it corresponded to 1-O and thanked to “Euskal Herria” the image of a crowd celebrating Athletic Bilbao’s success, taking it as a demonstration against the application of article 155 of the Constitution in Catalonia.
As an MEP, he became interested in one of the favorite topics of conspiracy theorists, chemtrails, echoing a hoax about the alleged fumigation of Spanish airspace to change the climate, on which the European Commission (EC) replied that there was no evidence.
He also asked the EC for a sentence pronounced in the TV5 comedy “Aída” by the character – satirically xenophobic and fascist – Mauricio Colmenero: “Imagine that any undesirable or, worse, a Catalan keeps him.” Likewise, hand in hand with the then ICV MEP and later Foreign Regional Minister, Raül Romeva, asked the EC about the stomp given by a Real Madrid player, Pepe, to the FC Barcelona star, Lionel Messi.
Romeva himself, who along with Tremosa has fought for the Catalan language to make its way into the european institutions, had been uneasy in 2009 with “the sympathies that Tremosa has with a party, the Vlaams Belang”, of the Flemish extreme nationalist right party.
Tremosa, an exponent of the liberal wing of the old Convergència, in addition to fake news and unusual questions as a european representative, has also stood out for maintaining tough positions on immigration policy and has participated in tributes to the Badia brothers – leaders of the Escamot fascist -, as did the current president of the Generalitat, Quim Torra, and the former vice-president Oriol Junqueras.
