Journalists on Catalan public television ask Torra’s government not try to colonize the news programs on the network and defend their professional criteria to spread the information of the Spanish Government on COVID19 in equity.

The Professional Council of News of the public Catalan autonomous channel TV3 has released a statement entitled “Informació Institucional dins els Telenotícies” (Institutional Information in the News) where they complain about what they consider to be an exaggerated presence of representatives of organizations of the Generalitat in the news of the channel “Telenotícies”.

“We defend without reservation that our platforms are made available to citizens’ representatives in cases of great need and emergencies such as the one we are experiencing,” they point out, but that this “is not equivalent to allowing their colonization by institutional activity.” .

The News Council stresses that “information programming must be covered with information criteria” and recall that “institutional messages must be the exception and not the norm”.

Likewise, the Council considers that “the interviews and appearances of the crisis managers must be submitted to our scrutiny and filter.” In addition, they request the recovery of the informative channel 324 “to report live and on separate TV3 broadcasts” and the broadcasting of appearances and live press conferences through this antenna and that thus “space will be freed in the TV stations to include elaborated news by the editorial staff ”.

In reference to the differences in criteria between the Catalan and Spanish governments in relation to the crisis, they point out “we have to be especially careful” in the treatment of information that “should include the assessments that each government makes of the actions of the other, but without forget to stick to the fact that the last word in any action has been given to the Spanish Government ”, which is the one that centralizes the actions and the declaration of the state of alarm.
