How does police behaviour (Catalan and Spanish police forces) resisting violent riots during this past week compare with treatment in France and the UK in similar situations?
The truth is both the Catalan and Spanish police forces have been responding to the highest standards of self-control and restraint despite extremely intense violence exerted against them by radicals using lethal objects.
On Friday, the most violent day of all, the pro-independentists rioters have burned the streets and attacked the police with all kinds of objects: washing machines, ovens, spikes, shovels, axes, bearings, screws, chainsaws, cobblestones torn from the street itself, with street furniture.
Conversations between policemen show that they had not lived anything like it in their lives. “It’s a fucking hell, pure madness,” says one, while the other “is a fucking war and a fucking trap.”
There were a lot of wounded police mates, many were left unconscious and many with broken arms and hands.
The injured were:
288 injured policemen (one fighting for life) 188 injured attackers 82 arrests
The “Extinction Rebellion” demonstrations (in one October weekend, 2019) in the UK resulted in more than 1300 arrests just for blocking roads.
In France, successive demonstrations which included serial acts of violence committed by “yellow vests” had resulted in up to 8000 arrests and 1800 prison sentences by february 2019.
