They ask the Government of Catalonia to comply with 25% of Spanish in Catalan schools and make immersion more flexible
More than 1,800 lawyers have signed a petition of support to the statement of the Constitutional Law Section of the Barcelona Bar Association (Icab) approved on December 20, where Catalan government is asked to comply with the judicial decisions that set a 25 % of Spanish in Catalan schools and ask to make language immersion more flexible.
In statements to the media at the Icab headquarters, the lawyer and professor of Civil Law at the University of Barcelona (UB) Chantal Moll has expressed the concern of the 1,800 signatories regarding the declarations of Catalan Government by not complying with the sentence that recognizes the right to schooling in Spanish, as a vehicular language alongside Catalan.
She explained that the Generalitat has the obligation to “dictate measures to guarantee Spanish and Catalan” to the educational system in Catalonia, and that 25% of teaching hours must be carried out in both languages.
Moll criticized “all discrimination and abuse against any minor”, and assured that the lawyers of the Constitutional Law Section of Icab are available to report any harassment.
