We cannot afford to continue with the rhetoric and gestures of permanent confrontation of our institutions of self-government with the government of Spain.Turning the necessary unity in the fight against Covid-19 and its consequences into a new political conflict is, in our opinion, a very serious mistake that we can still avoid. The defense of a pro-independence program, legitimate as it may be, cannot serve at this time to feed the grievances and amplify the mistakes that one and the other may commit.

Portes Obertes del Catalanisme wants to appeal, once again, to understanding and political and institutional responsibility in these very serious and complex moments due to Covid-19.

We believe that now it is time to mobilize all the resources of our society to overcome the pandemic and to face with determination its serious consequences.

The efforts of the Generalitat de Catalunya must be directed, without doubt, to fight the disease from the health field, providing, to the extent possible, all the resources to support hospitals, nursing homes, primary care centers and the Catalan social health system as a whole.

Likewise, the Government of the Generalitat must prepare to face the economic and social consequences of this very serious crisis, launching measures to reactivate economic activity, cooperating without reservation with the government of Spain, the rest of the Autonomous Communities and with the European institutions. If we are not able to control the fall in economic activity, we run the risk of further setbacks in social cohesion that especially the most disadvantaged people and groups would suffer. We need, now more than ever, a broad vision of the country’s politics and needs, making a common front to tackle health, social and economic challenges.

The situation is, in our opinion, so serious that we cannot afford to continue with the rhetoric and gestures of permanent confrontation of our institutions of self-government with the government of Spain.

The defense of an independence program, legitimate as it may be, cannot serve at this time to feed the grievances and amplify the mistakes that one and the other may commit. No government, no ruler, no public institution, of whatever level, today moves with absolute certainty to face a crisis that is totally unknown to all.

Turning the necessary unity in the fight against Covid-19 and its consequences into a new political conflict is, in our opinion, a very serious mistake that we can still avoid.

Barcelona, April 2020

The defense of a pro-independence program, legitimate as it may be, cannot serve at this time to fuel grievances and amplify the mistakes that one and the other may commit.
