This mission, requested by Ciudadanos, will be held in the second half of 2023 due to the holding of municipal and regional elections.

The European Parliament‘s Petitions Committee will decide by written procedure to send a mission to Catalonia in the second half of 2023 to analyse the situation of Spanish in this autonomous community, as agreed today at a meeting of the political group coordinators.

This mission, formally requested last February by Ciudadanos, will in any case have to be held in the second half of the year due to the holding of municipal and regional elections, which prevent it from taking place in the pre-election period.

“Violation of rights”

Ciudadanos has defended from the beginning this mission, demanded by constitutionalist organisations “with the aim of analysing the violation of the civil rights of students who have judicially requested to study in Spanish and not only in Catalan, and who now see their rights annulled”, explains the orange formation in a statement.

In future meetings of the coordinators, the details of the mission related to the mandate, agenda and members will be finalised.

Likewise, the group coordinators of the Petitions Committee agreed, also at the request of Ciudadanos, to hold an information session in the first half of 2023, hearing in English, which will address the issue of the Spanish language in Catalonia.
