The legal services of the European Parliament have concluded that the procedure to comply with the Junqueras case ruling issued by the EU Court of Justice was correct. This is how the jurists of the Chamber responded to the Legal Affairs commission, which will be in charge of deciding on the request submitted by the Supreme Court to withdraw immunity from Carles Puigdemont and Toni Comín. The rapporteur of the case will be the Bulgarian conservative Angel Dzhambazki, a member of the ECR group, to which Vox and the N-VA Flemish nationalists belong.

The commission received the legal services report last Friday, according to Europa Press. The lawyers consider that the president of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, acted correctly with the procedure, when he transferred the matter to the commission and when he announced the vacancy of the republican leader without consulting with that commission. Even so, the president of the commission, the British liberal Lucy Nethsingha, decided to raise this doubt to the legal services after listening to the groups at a meeting on January 16.

The Greens / ALE, a group to which republican group belongs, tried unsuccessfully to include Junqueras in a report that endorses the credentials of MEPs at the beginning of the legislature. In this, the declarations of interests and incompatibilities are validated. The European Chamber has recognized Puigdemont and Comín as MEPs. Instead, he informed that the firm decision of the process leaves Junqueras without the possibility of assuming his minutes.

Puigdemont and Comín now face the process on the request sent by the Supreme. Both deputies, in addition, will also submit to the decision of the group The Greens on Wednesday on whether they should be accepted in their group with Clara Ponsatí, who is part of the five Spanish MEPs who will enter the Eurochamber when Brexit becomes effective . The decision must be taken by consensus or by forcing a vote in which the petition must obtain an absolute majority.
