Oriol López Mayolas, councilor and spokesperson for the ERC at the Mollet del Vallès City Council, rejects the Army’s help to curb the coronavirus epidemic in this town in the Barcelona belt.
Despite the fact that the pandemic has already caused more than 2,000 deaths and 20,000 infections in Catalonia, López has underestimated the contribution of the Military Emergency Unit (UME) in tasks such as the construction of field hospitals or the disinfection of nursing homes – where this disease has already caused almost 400 deaths – in this autonomous community.
“Regrettable”
Specifically, about 60 soldiers from the Barcelona 62 regiment of the Spanish Army went to Mollet Hospital and Mollet Sociosanitary Hospital on Monday to disinfect their exteriors, as well as three nursing homes, at the request of the city’s socialist mayor, Josep Monràs.
Unaware of this reality, López, the ERC councilor in Mollet, considers the presence of the Army in his city to carry out these functions “regrettable”. And he compares it, even, with the dictatorship of General Francisco Franco, when April 1 coincided with the date on which the Spanish civil war ended in 1939.
“On April 1, 2020 we have the army walking through Mollet to show that they are still there. Regrettable,” López wrote this Monday on his Twitter profile.
“They have to be detested”
In the last hours, the leader of the ERC has lavished himself with these kinds of slogans: “All armies, and more if they are occupying forces, have to be detested by the intelligence. We do not need them at all,” he affirmed in one of his most recent tweets.
López Mayolas was born in Mollet, has a degree in Catalan Philology and worked in a family business of which he was appointed attorney in 2012, three months after the company transferred its registered office to Mollet from Vitoria (Álava), where until then it paid its taxes, despite developing their activity in Catalonia, as revealed by Global Chronicle.
The company in question is engaged in the rental of real estate, property administration, land acquisition, general building, services related to real estate property and the sale and exchange of real estate.
