The prisoners of the procés after leaving the prison Quique García / EFE
Integrative and disruptive people
The release from jail of the nine independence prisoners unfolded the liturgy of the great solemnities. The emotion of those who recovered their freedom and that of those who considered that the penalties were disproportionate or the crime non-existent was logical.
Strong emotions have returned to Catalan politics and, in equal measure, to Spanish politics. We are entering a period of reinforced rhetoric that will be seen on radio and television, local festivals and other civic gatherings.
A minimum pact between Catalans is the condition to protect the freedom of all
Each one manages his feelings as he wants, but it would be more useful if we put the symbolism of the abstract aside for a while and change the gestures for attempts to reach pacts between the Catalans first, and between Catalans and Spaniards later. Since there is not going to be a unilateral rupture, according to Oriol Junqueras, the most intelligent thing would be to look for the meeting points by reducing the rhetoric that tries to build victimhood, triumphant or derogatory stories about those who think differently.
The British did not accept the French Revolution because of its abstract nature and because it ignored the complexity of human nature. Edmund Burke wrote his impressions of what was happening in Paris in 1790, a year after the storming of the Bastille, saying that the English are sentimental but practical exhibiting an ironic immunity to the intellectually charismatic. They already starred in the industrial revolution of 1688, the Glorious, which would involve the change of a Catholic king, James II, for his daughter María and Guillermo de Orange, who led the Protestant cause.
I found significant the banner displayed by the Lledoners prisoners that Joaquim Forn related to the one that a group of young people, including him, displayed at the opening of the 1992 Olympic Games while Pasqual Maragall delivered his inaugural speech at the stadium in Montjuïc. It run as “Freedom for Catalonia”, the seed to internationalize a cause that has ended up attracting global news attention and has led us to where we are.
The litigation comes from far away, as well as the old political and sociological struggle between the metropolitan area of Barcelona and the rest of Catalonia. It is not about gaining the internal narrative among the Catalans but about entering the path of politics to overcome the two undercurrents, the integrating and the disruptive, that cross the deep waters of a country that one half cannot own.without counting on the other half. It is essential to protect the freedom of all.
