Support for independence falls to its historical low. According to the Catalan CIS, only 38.8% of the citizens of Catalonia want it to become an independent state, the lowest figure since the Generalitat began to test the support of citizens for secession in 2014.
Support for separation from the rest of Spain had bottomed out in June 2017, months before the illegal 1-O referendum was held. In the heat of the attack on the constitutional order, support for independence soared, but since July 2019, uninterruptedly, there are always more Catalans who, when consulted by the demoscopic entity of the Generalitat, are running in favor of staying in Spain .
The novelty now lies in the fact that the gap with respect to the separatists has widened. According to the survey published today by the Center for Opinion Studies (CEO), those opposed to the rupture outnumber the secessionists by 15 points, since 53.3% declare that they do not want Catalonia to become “an independent State”.
The Generalitat survey also asks about what should be the fit of Catalonia in the State, with the current status of autonomous community being the most supported, with 34% support, compared to 30% who demand its conversion into its own state and the 19% who defend their permanence in a “federal” Spain.
