The Government of Catalonia is at a crossroads. It has to decide whether to take the path of centrality that leads to normality and political calm, or if it opts for the path of radicalism that leads to confusion and chaos. Yes, friends, it takes a lot of patience to cope with the stale atmosphere of this tired and autumnal Catalonia with good humor.

I confess, I am gloomy and somewhat listless. Connoisseurs say that in autumn this state of mind is caused by an alteration of the vital, or circadians, rhythms which have to do with the reduction of solar hours and the times of sleep and wakefulness.

But no, my discouragement has nothing to do with the fall of the leaf or the drop in temperature. Mine is caused by what this country is capable of generating in the field of nonsense.

One is surprised that Jordi Pujol, the old patriarch of conservative nationalism, reappears on stage to affirm that, on his day, he also signed up for the Basque Economic Agreement. The truth is that in Madrid only the txistu (the basque flute) sounded, and the basque nationalist party PNV says that the gralla (the Catalan flute) of the former president was not heard.

But if we talk of gratuitous and irresponsible statements, those of a regional MP of Junts in the Parliament of Catalonia arguing that “we are at war” (against Spain of course). Desperate the verbiage for self-consumption that independentists who are fighting for the leadership of the movement, they know how to work it very well.

This is not a way to go anywhere or heal wounds. As if that weren’t enough, as an ordinary citizen, I have to put up with the repeated mantra: “We Catalans don’t have a king.” Although the spiel is useless, it is heard every time a Bourbon attends an act, or inauguration, in Catalan territory. And all this folklore is inspired by a court in exile in which the kinglet, and the buffoons, unleash crazy political occurrences to keep morale high in the midst of a desolate secessionism.

Meanwhile, in Barcelona, under the crinoline of Laura Borràs, the history of the Assemblea de Catalunya is adulterated without shame and, a couple of supposed humorists manifest lubricious desires with queens and infantas … Painful.

I insist, mine is not chagrin d’amour, but civic anger. Anger and more than anger when I contemplate how the president of the Generalitat commits the clumsiness of making the ball, unnecessarily, to the CUP on the budget issue; or as some political formations are willing to suggest to the security forces that they face the fire of rioters with good words and flowers. Pathetic.

Catalan political salad is seasoned with spices as depressing as they are irritating. And the truth is that some of its main characters survive in it unable to get out of the melancholic loop. The icing on the cake is put by a stubborn Jordi Cuixart who calls patriots to sacrifice and immolation, without his colleagues making amends for him. To make matters worse, in this Catalonia of tears and fantasies, it is more difficult for a MP to know the salary that Pilar Rahola receives on TV3 than to find out the secret formula of Coca-Cola.

Do not tell me that there are no reasons for sadness and abandonment. But let’s give time to time and don’t lose hope.
