Non-partisan and pluralist communication and debate platform

Defending the work of the police today does not provide votes and can even be seen as reactionary. The Parliament of Catalonia, for example, registered an unusual event last week: the parties that are part of the Government of the Generalitat voted against a resolution that defended "the restitution and reinforcement of the authority" of the Catalan police Mossos d 'Esquadra. It does not make any sense that the support of the institutions themselves to their bodies and security forces falters. This situation has caused the unprecedented union of the police union world, historically very divided, which has scheduled a joint demonstration of its thirteen unions for the next 23 October. A report carried out by the A Fondo section of La Vanguardia reveals that attacks on police officers have skyrocketed throughout Spain and may, if the current trend continues, grow up to 42% more than in 2019 and a 63.8% more than in 2015. To what extent the pandemic, public massive drinking or the situation of discomfort of many layers of society influences this behavior is a duty of sociologists, but what is clear is that the principle of authority of the police force is weakening. All this breeding ground ends up generating this impunity that translates into the figures we are writing today. The police are not our enemy, but precisely the force necessary to guarantee our safety.

Defending the work of the police today does not provide votes and can even be seen as reactionary. The Parliament of Catalonia, for example, registered an unusual event last week: the parties that are part of the Government of the Generalitat voted against a resolution that defended “the restitution and reinforcement of the authority” of the Mossos d ‘Esquadra. The reasons for doing so was that the proposal urged the Government of Catalonia to judicially process complaints for actions against the authority, something that was not done in the last year. This situation has caused the unprecedented union of the police union world, historically very divided, which has scheduled a joint demonstration of its thirteen unions for the next 23 October. Regional Minister Joan Ignasi Elena reacted yesterday highlighting the increase in agents and resources for this year. And it is that it does not make any sense that the support of the institutions themselves to their bodies and security forces falters. The agreement reached between ERC and the CUP was a bad precedent for the current legislature, which established that the Generalitat could not participate as a private accusation against protesters in mobilizations, except those in which the agents were injured. The Barcelona City Council’s policy of stopping the intervention teams of the Urban Guard has not helped either.

All this breeding ground ends up generating this impunity that translates into the figures we are writing today. The police are not our enemy, but precisely the force necessary to guarantee our safety.

Something so obvious that it would not deserve to be remembered.
