The social democratic group in the European Parliament have demanded this Monday that ties between the Catalan independence movement and Russian Intelligence be investigated, after the information published by the American newspaper 'The New York Times'. "The recent revelations about close and regular contacts between Russian officials, including members of the security service, and representatives of a group of Catalan secessionists in Spain require an in-depth investigation," says the amendment presented by the social democratic group. Croatian socialist Tonino Picula has proposed an amendment that refers to the ties of the Kremlin with the Catalan independence movement. According to Picula, this case "could turn out to be another example of Russian interference in the member states and of Russia's constant attempts to exploit any issue that could promote the internal destabilization of the Union."

BRUSSELS, 13 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The social democratic group in the European Parliament have demanded this Monday that ties between the Catalan independence movement and Russian Intelligence be investigated, after the information published by the American newspaper ‘The New York Times’.

In a report prepared by the popular Lithuanian Andrius Kubilius on the relationship with Russia that will be debated this Tuesday in the plenary session of the European Parliament and will be voted on the following day, the Croatian socialist Tonino Picula has proposed an amendment that refers to the ties of the Kremlin with the Catalan independence movement.

“The recent revelations about close and regular contacts between Russian officials, including members of the security service, and representatives of a group of Catalan secessionists in Spain require an in-depth investigation,” says the amendment presented by the social democratic group.

According to Picula, this case “could turn out to be another example of Russian interference in the member states and of Russia’s constant attempts to exploit any issue that could promote the internal destabilization of the Union.”

The petition joins the Citizens’ demand that has repeatedly demanded that the Foreign Action Service, led by Josep Borrell, investigate the revelations of the American newspaper.
