Former Parliament President Carme Forcadell / DAVID ZORRAKINO (EUROPAPRESS)
Forcadell asks the independence movement to “wait and see what happens” with the dialogue table
The former president of Catalan Parliament rejects the unilateralism with which she acted in 2017 and urges to seek an agreed solution to the Catalan conflict
The former president of the Parliament and ERC leader, Carme Forcadell, has reiterated her rejection of unilateralism to proclaim the independence of Catalonia. In fact, she has assured that now “is the time for dialogue” and she has asked the independence movement to “speak later” about this alternative in the event that the pact fails.
This unilateralism, witnessed on October 27, 2017 when she was President of the Parliament, already led that year to the declaration of symbolic independence of Catalonia, for which she was investigated and convicted by the Supreme Court (TS) for the crimes of sedition and embezzlement. However, Forcadell has changed his mind after her pardon and the proposal to address the path of negotiation to resolve the Catalan conflict. “Now we are at the time of the dialogue table and I believe that the independence movement cannot renounce the banner of dialogue,” the Republican assured in an interview on Catalunya Ràdio.
Discrepancies with JxCat
Her statements collide with the alternative defended by the heavyweights of JxCat. The vice president of the Government, Jordi Puigneró (JxCat), assured this Sunday that the option of the unilateral path towards independence should be kept alive to have more force in the negotiation with the Government. Something that, according to Forcadell, now does not touch. The former political prisoner is committed to putting the rupture aside and repeating the events of four years ago and “see what happens with the dialogue table.” “From October 2017 to now nothing has changed. The situation would be the same and exactly the same would happen ”, Forcadell warned to justify advocating dialogue before unilateralism. “I am somewhat curious to know what the State puts on the table,” concluded the former president of the Parliament. Her words affect the clash between the two forces in the Catalan Government and increase the distance between the secessionist parties.
