34.4% of young people between the ages of 15 and 34 in Barcelona prefer that Catalonia remains an Autonomous Community of Spain, according to the results of the Barcelona Youth Survey 2020. This option has risen almost 7 points from the last survey, in 2015, and has displaced independence movement to second place, which has the support of 32.9% of young people in Barcelona.
By age group, the youngest – from 15 to 19 and from 20 to 24 – opt for the creation of an independent State, while the oldest – from 25 to 29 and 30 to 34 – prefer autonomy. If we take into account the strata, where 1 is the one with the lowest income and 3 the highest, independence is the first option in those where the average household income is higher -the 2 and 3-, while the autonomism gains weight in stratum 1.
The option of Catalonia being a State within a federal Spain has practically not changed compared to 2015, and has the support of 22.1% of the young people surveyed. On the other hand, the idea that it is only a region of Spain has lost strength and has gone from 11.9% to 10.5%. In general terms, 73.3% of young people in Barcelona identify with a left-wing ideology.
Regarding the linguistic area, the use of Catalan fell 7 points compared to 2015, making Spanish the most common language by far. 28.4% speak Catalan regularly, compared to 62.1% who speak Spanish. By strata, those where the average income is higher – 2 and 3 – the use of Catalan is higher, although not the majority, while in stratum 1 – with the lowest income – the differences are accentuated: only 13 9% habitually speak Catalan, compared to 69.7% who speak Spanish.
The young people surveyed have identified as their first priority that the City Council facilitates access to housing. Although the majority of those between 25 and 34 years old have become emancipated and do not live with their parents – only 15% do – the average monthly income of young people is low, of 888 euros, and they are forced to allocate practically all the profits to household expenses, about 893.8 euros on average.
