The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, together with his Italian counterpart, Mario Dragui, and the President of Foment del Treball, Josep Sánchez Llibre Marta Perez / Foment
Doubly awarded
The first personal meeting yerterday between Pedro Sánchez and Pere Aragonès, since the latter was president of the Generalitat, confirmed all the good expectations that had been created to advance a sincere dialogue on the Catalan conflict. It is clear that the solutions that each of the two parties have to address the problem are very different, but the great news is that, after years where the closure of the central Government and the unilateralism of the Government of the Generalitat have prevailed, now both sides have been conspiring to try to reach an agreement. The two options “have to be valued with the same respect”, as Aragonès said yesterday, who did not mind acknowledging that the Government of Sánchez had “taken steps forward” since “never before had been recognised the need to address the resolution of a conflict of this nature”. The Spanish president encouraged him to seek together a new “us”, changing threats for proposals “wherever they come from”.
What better coincidence than this hopeful climate, unprecedented in recent years in Spanish politics, took place in an event organized by employer’s main organization Foment del Treball that rewarded the career of the publisher of La Vanguardia, Javier Godó, Count of Godó. Just one of the men who have fought the most for the defense of dialogue and for Catalonia to find its place in what he considers “the complex reality of the State” yesterday received two great prizes: the Foment award and the verification of the new climate that has been generated between the two governments.
The stage that is now beginning to open has two years ahead without an electoral appointment. It is a unique opportunity that is worth taking advantage of. Everyone is aware that there are many sectors interested in this option sinking. The PP, for example, which has lost a good opportunity to engage in state politics. And the voices that are already being raised in the pro-independence world against ERC for its surrender to the Spanish Government. It will not be easy. But it is the only possible way. The atmosphere that was breathed yesterday in Foment invited optimism. Now it’s time to go down from staging to reality.
