Independence demonstration after the recent Catalan regional elections / JORDI COTRINA
In the emotional flood the independence ‘procés’ has represented, social issues were relegated or blurred under the aspiration of creating a new country. The situation was lacerating for a part of the non-nationalist left, which was not only powerless to place the social urgencies caused by the economic crisis on the agenda, but was also accused of treason against Catalonia. Even so, it is fair to recognize that the ‘procés’ was also joined by many who believed they saw an opportunity to shake the system and build a fairer, more egalitarian country, where diversity was admired and not punished. A country without gags.
With the withdrawal of the waters of the independence ‘procés’, so exciting and uniting for so many, the elements that made it up have emerged. Some reveal the most stark struggle for power. Others reveal multiple interests, from economic to media. Of course, nationalistic yearnings. But, also, the ambition to combat the multiple abuses to which our society is subjected. There are many who can be found in these struggles. At last, a challenge for the left, for all the left. Detach from the past to build a better future.
