The unions UGT and CCOO have defended this Tuesday the need to grant pardons to the leaders of the secessionist process to open a “new political time” and “overcome past episodes” in Catalonia.
In a joint statement, both trade union organizations believe that the stay in prison of the politicians convicted of the illegal referendum on secession of October 1 and the unilateral declaration of independence of October 27, 2017 represents a “serious impediment” to “promote this scenario of dialogue “in Catalonia. A scenario that, according to the opinion of these two unions, would serve “to redirect the deliberative and transactional path of politics.”
“Essential”
According to the UGT and CCOO, the granting of pardons to these former political leaders is “essential”, and they believe that it is not a “sufficient” condition to redirect the current situation.
“We must recover the value of dialogue, negotiation, the will to agree. And for this, the participation of these people –referents in their parties and social movements and who have already spent a long period in jail– is essential” , they say.
“Confrontation” in Spain
The two unions value “the means of negotiation” between the Catalan political forces and the institutions of “self-government” with those of the whole of the country. “They have a decisive role to play,” they have pointed out.
In this context, the unions consider that Spain is at a “highly undesirable level of political confrontation” and believe that “country” policies require “basic consensus” that today seem “unlikely”.
“Challenges and opportunities”
However, they have expressed that “the channeling” of European recovery funds “appear as a determining factor” to improve the Spanish economic and social model and have pointed out that the economic recovery will be “very intense.”
“Spain faces challenges and also opportunities of strategic significance in the coming years. With the vaccination process advancing at a good pace, the economic recovery that is coming suggests that it will be very intense”, they have settled.
