Jordi Juan – Director – 3 June 2021
The first session of Parliament with the new Government yesterday confirmed that feeling that is spreading little by little in the political and economic environments of the country that something is beginning to change in Catalonia. Forgive the audacity because it is still too early to reach clear conclusions, but the indications do not seem to fool anyone. If first it was the appointment of a series of high positions for the Government where the technical profile stood out over the political one, yesterday’s plenary session experienced a white glove atmosphere as has not been remembered for some time. President Pere Aragonès offered to speak with all the groups before going to talk with PM Pedro Sánchez in Moncloa and, in turn, the leader of the opposition, the socialist Salvador Illa, was in favor of agreeing the budgets with the Government . The vice president, Jordi Puigneró, went a little further in the controversy over the possible expansion of the Josep Tarradellas airport and stated that Catalonia “cannot afford the luxury of not having an airport prepared for the economy of the 21st century”, while various economic entities starred in an act favorable to the Aena project.
It is no longer a question of comparing the current legislature with the previous one, where the controversy over the election or not of Carles Puigdemont as president delayed the creation of a government for several months, but the preceding one was also marked by the beginning of the process and the problems caused by the step aside of Artur Mas. Now it is about something as simple as governing and making up for lost time. In Madrid they have also noticed it. A few days have passed since the appointment of the new teams, but some ministries have already received calls from Catalonia requesting meetings to review pending issues, something that was previously noted to be lacking. It seems that in the new Government there is a rush to do things and that citizens are beginning to notice the results.
This climate can be definitively consolidated from the pardons to leaders of the process that the Government will execute in the coming weeks. It is not the solution to the conflict in Catalonia, far from it, but it will surely bring even more tranquility to the country.
