Maria Jesús Montero – Minister of Finance and spokesperson Spanish Government
The Minister of Finance and spokesperson for the government of Spain, María Jesús Montero, has reacted to the pre-agreement of ERC and Junts, expressing, in an interview with Cadena SER, that “we hope that the three pro-independence formations have understood that the makeup of the new government must also lead to the abandonment of unilateral ways, as well as other questions that we already know where they lead us. “
Montero added that “I hope they have learned from the previous stage”, although she foresees that the formation of the new Catalan government “will be surrounded by a lot of symbolism”, and also hopes that “it is not dedicated to confrontation.” Regarding the pardons, he replied that it is a procedure that “must continue to be developed”, but he said that “the important thing” is that the new Catalan government does not follow a path that, in his opinion, does not lead “anywhere except the prison.”
The spokeswoman for the Spanish government, who has welcomed the new Catalan executive, but has considered that the government that “Catalonia needs at the moment” was the one proposed by the socialist candidate, Salvador Illa, has proposed the resumption of the table as necessary dialogue, an initiative that was put on hold for the last year that was launched between representatives of the Pedro Sánchez government and the government of the Generalitat that is now in office.
