The discredit of a good part of the political class has led many citizens to think that a country can function much better without a government. And almost always to exemplify it, the case of Italy is used, a country that is economically strong despite having great political instability that leads it to change the head of government with excessive ease. But it is one thing that politics or conflicts between the various parties are of less and less interest, and quite another is that a country can navigate alone and it does not require an organized government to carry it out.
In Catalonia for a long time, for various reasons, the rulers who have passed through the Generalitat have declined to exercise their work, either due to lack of strength or also due to lack of will, because the objective was to govern a state and not simple autonomy. Catalonia has experienced such exceptional situations as the suppression of its autonomy through article 155 of the Constitution or permanent paralysis due to the weakness of its different rulers. It only remains to add that, since the failed DUI of 2017, the office of the President of the Generalitat remains empty.
The regional financing system or the lack of budgetary investments of the State have always been present as a great obstacle for the work of the Government from the first day that Jordi Pujol arrived at the Generalitat, but today we should not only look at Madrid. There are many important decisions that depend on the Catalan executive that are eternalizing without any sense. On Sunday we recalled the controversy over the expansion of the third runway at El Prat airport, which could cause Aena not to end up making a necessary investment of 1,700 million euros. Today we recall that the installation of wind and photovoltaic parks in Catalonia has been blocked for more than ten years and the Government has failed to meet the reduction targets set by the EU.
The abandonment of functions should not continue any longer. Now that we have seen the wolf’s ears in the face of the increasingly certain possibility of new elections, it would be worth it for all parties to make one last effort at realism to avoid it. The country needs it.
