In Catalonia the reality principle was blown up in 2017. Karl Deutsch in 'Nations in Crisis' (1981) explains that nationalism is the ideology that most inhibits individuals from following rational behavior in decision-making, so that strongly nationalist societies often end up acting against their own interests. Karl Deutsch in ‘Nations in Crisis’ (1981) explains that nationalism is the ideology that most inhibits individuals from following rational behavior in decision-making, so that strongly nationalist societies often end up acting against their own interests. For this German political scientist, nationalism can be described as “moderate” if its defenders continue to be guided on a day-to-day basis by realistic analyzes. In Catalonia, ‘pujolismo’ represented that for decades, but with Artur Mas everything changed and it was first put in the hands of the Republicans Oriol Junqueras and Marta Rovira, who are the fathers of the magical independence movement. Shortly after, he had to humour CUP and its successor, Carles Puigdemont, was submitted to a motion of confidence in 2016 for the anti-system to approve the Budgets, to go ahead with the ‘procés’. The reality principle was blown up in 2017.

“Moderate” nationalism no longer exists in Catalonia, what there is is an independence movement that is called “realistic” and that, oh, surprise, ERC heads. But it is a realism that has nothing to do with the interests of the Catalans, with their well-being and progress, but rather appeals to pragmatism to rival JuntsxCat for power. Rovira, who is ERC’s secretary general, constantly repeats that the Ibex-35 must be fought, that is, also against the large Catalan firms such as Fluidra, Sabadell, Almirall, CaixaBank, Cellnex, Colonial and Grífols. Republicans have practically internalized the same discourse of the CUP against the economic world. Let us remember that Junqueras already proposed years ago to stop the Catalan economy for a week so that Spain would “shake”. Now Pere Aragonès has committed to achieve the investiture, although we will see what are the conditions that Puigdemont finally puts on him, submit to a motion of confidence in the middle of the legislature and carry out another (anti) democratic attack against the State to make more or less the same as in 2017. In the independence movement there are no “moderates”, nor are there “realists”.
