Laura Borrás, elected president of Catala Parliament. /
ELISENDA PONS
There were no surprises in the speech of the new president of Catalan Parliament, Laura Borràs. Pure processist story: we have done nothing wrong and the repression of perfidious Spain has fallen on us. On one side, the fascist heritage and Bourbon authoritarianism. On the other, the independentist Arcadian assimilated to a unique idea of Catalonia. Nothing for those who do not share their desire for sovereignty. Only contempt and suspicion of not being considered part of that people so invoked. There was also no one towards his predecessor, that Roger Torrent who in his first speech opted for “contributing to sew Catalan society”.
Borràs invited all the representatives of the democratic forces “not to echo the totalitarian ideas that strive to spread dangerously in our society.” It is the position of so many European parliaments towards the extreme right, but it is still contradictory to launch that speech when the basis of one’s own is exclusion and contempt for those who think differently. Totalitarianism is fought by not truffling the political story of lies, respecting ideological diversity and preserving coexistence.
