‘Grup Pròleg’ calls on the Catalan left-wing people and parties to be willing to join forces for the benefit of the country and encourages participation
Catalan citizens have been summoned to elect their representatives in the midst of a deep crisis of multiple dimensions: health, economic, social and institutional. The political fatigue suffered by citizens and the material conditions of voting can promote electoral inhibition. We believe, however, that high abstention would be a bad starting point for facing the challenges that defy us as a society. Therefore, we encourage citizens to overcome the resistance and difficulties of participation and to exercise their right to vote.
We do it because we believe that – with all its weaknesses – democratic politics is the only one that will allow us to free ourselves from the stagnation we suffer and avoid the risk of a collective decline, now exacerbated by the consequences of the pandemic. The pluralism of Catalan society offers different political options in the face of the crisis. The capacities and limits of these options have been expressed from the government and from the opposition. From our point of view, so far no adequate response has been given to the need to correct the situation, as demanded by the citizens. With the elections, we now have the opportunity to put a positive turn on this situation.
For our part, we continue to believe that the Catalan left currently has a particular responsibility in the effort to achieve this collective recovery. We would like to underline that the main objectives of this task should be:
-Manage in a fair and efficient manner the repair of the damage caused by the pandemic and the transformation of the socioeconomic model;
-Give priority to the satisfaction of the rights of the most vulnerable social sectors with equitable social and fiscal policies;
-To actively participate in the recovery and transition strategies that are being organized by the PSOE-UP government and at the EU level;
-Strengthen the contacts already initiated between the State governments and the Generalitat to unblock the institutional blockade and explore ways out, including the release of the imprisoned Catalan leaders.
We believe that the Catalan left can jointly assume these objectives, restoring in our country the idea that democratic politics is not practiced with the unilateral imposition of each one’s own positions, but through continuous conversation between different options that seek the acceptable meeting point for the social majority. When this is not attempted or ignored, the door is opened for the growth of anti-democratic and xenophobic positions, traditional or renewed.
At this moment everyone’s responsibility becomes more evident. For this reason, we allow ourselves to make a double call. We ask our fellow citizens – despite political fatigue and unfavorable circumstances around us – to exercise their right to vote. And we ask the Catalan left-wing forces to guide their political work with a long-term vision and with the willingness to concert efforts for the benefit of the country.
