Catalan elections | Illa will resign if the elections in Catalonia are on 14-F: Last minute, live
The realization of the definitive date of the Catalan elections is still in the air, but the worst thing is that everything seems to indicate that the electoral campaign may begin on January 29 and it will not yet be known whether or not on February 14 it will be possible to vote. The Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) yesterday issued a resolution where it provisionally maintains the date of 14-F, but announces that its final decision will not be taken immediately, but that it is given several days before February 8. In other words, if no variation occurs, the political parties will start the campaign on the 29th without knowing the date of the vote. It could happen that there are citizens who vote by mail in an election that ultimately would not be held.
In fact, the different formations are already acting as if the 14-F were the final date and they maintain their electoral acts, the posters typical of a campaign or the traditional debates. No one is clear on how this conflict will be resolved, but, just in case, the electoral machinery has already begun to function. The Minister of Health, Salvador Illa, will resign from his post when the campaign begins as he announced, although he is not sure when the vote will be taken.
It really is an unprecedented situation with very few precedents in electoral history, not only in Spain, but in the world. A concatenation of events (dismissal of the president, inability of the Government parties to find a candidate to replace him, the pandemic, a debatable postponement decree and, finally, the resolutions of the TSJC) has led to this unusual point. They all seem lost in the maze.
It is difficult to guess what will finally happen but it seems very complicated that once the campaign begins, it can be stopped. It seems that we are headed to 14-F. For this reason, without further delay, it is good that the Government enables all the measures at its disposal to guarantee the safety of the members of the polling stations, as well as that of the voters. Catalonia is at stake in these elections and participation must continue to be very high, as in 2017.
