This week, the world has been stunned by the images of the occupation of the Capitol, where the police could not stop a mob that occupied the most sacrosanct rooms, such as the plenary hall, the office of the president of Congress or the rotunda where the USA honors its illustrious citizens. But in Catalonia, on the anniversary of 1-O, another invasion of a Parliament by hundreds of young pro-independentists with their faces covered was about to take place. The hooded men jumped the fences of a stage that President Quim Torra imposed in the Ciutadella, against the criteria of the Mossos, who wanted to move the commemorations away from the parliamentary headquarters. The bulk of the riot police were in Girona and the Parlament’s surveillance was entrusted to fifty citizen security police with hardly any material to prevent an assault.
On October 1, 2018, a Catalan police superintendent prevented the mob from occupying the Parliament
The protesters, armed with sticks and iron bars, broke glass and tried to force the door of the building, while the mossos fought to avoid it. The situation was very tense. Superintendent Carles Anfruns asked concilor Miquel Buch to act, while requesting reinforcements. But President Torra did not want police to charge against the pro-independent activists, whom he had encouraged in the morning to “put pressure” on the politicians. The superintendent called on the Mossos on duty in the vicinity of the park to join the defense of the Parliament. And he took command from the inside, although the ushers gave him trouble for carrying a gun. Imagine his response. Then he had a brilliant idea, which allowed the institution to be saved: he ordered the helicopter that was flying over the enclosure to descend to a short distance from the ground, which caused a cloud of sand that blinded the assailants and allowed the police to remove them, to then charge against, in an operation that lasted one minute. Torra never congratulated the brave who avoided an institutional disaster.
It is no coincidence that Josep Costa, who has been the last vice president of the Catalan Chamber and who will repeat on the JxCat list, wrote on Twitter a few weeks ago: “Many lessons need to be learned about how Trump came to power, how he has governed and how he was about to be re-elected. Especially new forms of communication, mobilization and political confrontation that everyone took for granted would not work”. Catalan Trumpism should worry us, at least, as much as the one that has horrified us on the Capitol.
