The leader of ERC, Oriol Junqueras / EP
Oriol Junqueras believes that in order for the independence aspirations in Catalonia to triumph, its promoters must gather more support than they currently have. The ERC leader points out from the Lledoners prison that the first stone of the separatist strategy is to exceed 50% of the votes but not only in the next regional elections but that this trend continues.
In an article published this Sunday in La Vanguardia, Junqueras, who is serving a 13-year sentence for sedition and embezzlement of public funds, launches a veiled message to the former president of the Generalitat, Carles Puigdemont, a fugitive from Justice, stating that “it is surprising that with what we have collectively learned, there are people who four days ago lived comfortably in autonomism but who now defend that to achieve independence we are already enough”.
A large majority
Junqueras defends in the letter that the triumph of the independence movement has been to pass in a decade from 10% to almost 50% of the support, although he urges to continue advancing along this path considering that it is still not enough. “To become a state it is essential to build a large majority in Catalonia”.
Also in response to Puigdemont, Junqueras defends dialogue with the central government to achieve the goal of independence and get the most out of the State, and at no time to contribute to the governance of Spain, in line with what has been stated in the last hours to the Efe lo manifestado en las últimas horas a la agencia Efeagency.
PGE in exchange for “billions”
“It would be naive to believe that the political dialogue with the State will bear immediate tangible results, but to believe that we can do without it would be a very expensive irresponsibility”, says the separatist leader, who also justifies ERC’s support for the General State Budgets by a more than juicy economic benefit. “The vast majority of citizens would not have understood that, in the midst of a pandemic, the pro-independence forces were ignoring the state budgets, giving away the key to Cs and renouncing billions”
However, he warns that the will to dialogue with Moncloa will have as a limit the acceptance by the central government of claims such as the amnesty of politicians imprisoned because of the procés, the recognition of the right to self-determination and, finally, the holding of a new independence referéndum.
Forcing the state
In this sense, Junqueras emphasizes that the strategy involves “forcing the State to accept self-determination and amnesty as the only ways to resolve the conflict with Catalonia”.
Otherwise, Junqueras insists that the episodes from early fall 2017 will be repeated. “The State must know that its refusal to negotiate another referendum, if it lasts over time, will lead to a unilateral action by the independence movement”.
The value of the dialogue table
From prison, the Republican leader has once again valued the dialogue table agreed with the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, despite the fact that there has been hardly any activity around it. For Junqueras, its mere existence is already a triumph of the independence movement because “in the eyes of the world it is the explicit recognition by the State of the existence of a conflict between two political subjects: Catalonia and the State”.
