Since the first step of the pro-independence movement, the supposed union of forces has been a political fiction in which a single message has been sustained. The reason was related to a fallacious argument that had and has a great penetration among the separatist groups: the process “el procés ” wass not born from a political formation, but from the so repetitive concept “a single united people” “el poble”. The single united people. Denomination that meant “poble català” leaving aside the rest of Catalan citizenship.
When all this happens, the appropriation of the community sense of the people as a whole by the movement will require deep sociological work because it was repetitive in the early twentieth century and has remained a characteristic of the story to this day. But it goes beside the point. The question now is to delve into the deception existing behind the sense of pro-independence unity.
The elections in which the movement was presented with the same initials, Junts pel Sí, was the year in which the need for unity forced the parties to leave the leaders of the pro-independence organizations at the top of the lists. Artur Mas (CDC) and Oriol Junqueras (ERC) placed four and five to allow Raül Romeva , Carme Forcadell (ANC) and Muriel Casals (Òmnium) to be in the top positions. That moment was the one of maximum unit exposure, although, as it happens now, it was false.
It was in their interest to show that all these political formations were behind the force of the single people “poble”. And it worked for them, but not in the extent they hoped for. And so, the parties that eliminated their initials from that campaign recovered them after that legislature.
Over time it is normal that the current Government shows a blatant disunity . And this divergence in opinions has nothing to do with the ideological part that, on the other hand, would be normal since parties supporting the government of Catalonia are a formation of the left plus another secretly of the right.
FIGHTS BETWEEN PROFILES OF DIFFERENT ACRONYMS
The reason connects with the fashion dichotomy: health or economy? And in Catalonia that train crash is represented in the positions of two regional ministers. Alba Vergés and Ramon Tremosa . Health and Business.
The first maintains, with a certain vehemence, the need for the catering sector to be kept closed in Catalonia to the bone . The second, a man who opts, not yet publicly, to be JxCat’s candidate for the next elections, prefers that bars and restaurants return to normality as soon as possible, even if it is progressive.
Both of them position themselves within their parties and also within the Catalan government with an eye toward the next elections. And in that approach they are accompanied by their political parties.
The question is whether their parties, and themselves, would have the same position if their portfolios of responsibility were those of the other. If Vergés were the business regional minister (she did not come to the Health department as a specialist in sanitary issues, although she worked in the Igualada Social Health Consortium on accounting issues) and Tremosa that of health. Would the arguments change? Absolutely.
That leads us to the core of the question: to what extent the position of a party in the face of a specific issue in the “processist” pro-independence movement is not supported by what is of interest at that time and not by an ideology. At this time, the main disunity between the families of the pro-independence movement, especially the one that touches power, refers to the professional sectors that each party controls from the different areas of the ministries and not to a political ideal. Not an electoral program.
Consequently, it is a photograph increasingly marked by the falsity of the content. There was never a single people “poble”, nor an exclusive persecution of the alleged consultation, nor a unitary electoral proposal, nor a social movement that was not absolutely political, nor a transversal coordination of the Generalitat to face the pandemic. Here each of the protagonists row for the extreme that interests them. Of course, with a single deceptive smile.
