The Minister of Justice, Juan Carlos Campo, confirmed this Thursday that the Government will promote this course the reform of the crime of sedition in the Penal Code, which would affect Catalan politicians imprisoned for the process.
“Justice will prepare it, it will be taken to the Council of Ministers, it will be informed by all those who have to be informed and a parliamentary debate will begin in which the text can be enriched,” explained the socialist minister on Cadena Ser.
A commitment made by President Sánchez
Campo has specified that it is a commitment that the President of the Government himself, Pedro Sánchez, announced in his inauguration speech. This same Monday, the president defended his position in a television interview, appealing to be “empathetic and sensitive” with the “emotional breakdown” that this situation implies for “part of Catalan society.”
Campo has pointed out that it is necessary to adapt a Penal Code “that has not been touched for 144 years” and has defended that its revision is a “very necessary formula” to adapt to the neighboring countries.
Penalty rebate
In this framework, the Government approved in the Council of Ministers last Tuesday the ‘2020 Normative Annual Plan’, which contemplates this reform of the Penal Code for its adaptation to the European framework. The modification would mean a reduction in the punishment that could benefit the prisoners of the procés.
In his interview on TVE last Monday, Sánchez reaffirmed his commitment and announced that the initiative “will continue.” “The objective of this Government is to update, modernize and review, via modification of the Penal Code, these crimes,” the president pointed out.
