Non-partisan and pluralist communication and debate platform

Home » Content » Britain’s constitutional time-bomb Brexit is already a political crisis. Sooner or later it will become a constitutional crisis, too
The Economist - Our cover this week reports on how Brexit could cause a constitutional crisis. America, France and Germany have rules set down in black and white. Democracy in the Mother of Parliaments has blossomed for over 300 years under an “unwritten” constitution. But a battle is looming between the next prime minister, who may well opt to leave the EU without a deal, and Parliament, which insists on one. It is unclear who should prevail—or even how to choose between them. Meanwhile Scotland is moving towards another push for independence, and Brexit could cast doubt on the legal basis of citizens’ rights. The constitution that Britons counted on to be adaptable and robust could soon start to feed chaos, division and Anglo-Scottish mistrust. Zanny Minton Beddoes, Editor-in-Chief
