The leader of the Catalan socialists warns that the importance of the current moment requires “political maturity in the face of what is at stake” and shows his respect for those who demonstrate against the Sánchez government as long as they do so “politely”.

The first secretary of the PSC, Salvador Illa, has responded this Saturday to the numerous voices critical of the agreements made by the recently invested president of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and the Catalan sovereigntist parties, especially in relation to the future amnesty law, with a call for positive feelings such as confidence and hope in the face of the tension and fear that this situation generates.

The leader of the opposition in Catalonia also referred to the current situation as transcendental and relevant, concluding that it requires “political maturity to know where we are and what is at stake”.

Democratic normality

The former Minister of Health at the beginning of the previous term of office made these statements in parallel with the rally that took place in Madrid against the amnesty, which brought together hundreds of thousands of people around the central Plaza de Cibeles.

Illa also referred to this act, who showed his respect for the citizens who have decided to demonstrate “politely”, although he also made it clear that the process of investiture of Sánchez, which culminated last Thursday with the vote, responds to the normal functioning of Spanish democracy, “which has once again demonstrated the solidity” of the institutions.

CEO favourable but…

After his visit to the Besòs sewage treatment plant and in response to questions from journalists about the CEO poll that has him as the winner of the next elections, Illa questioned the significance of the result, despite it being favourable to his party, considering that it was not the best time to carry out the consultation.

“It is necessary to allow time for decisions to calm down”, he explained, although he also wanted to make it clear that his party does not make decisions based on electoral criteria.

The most suitable

On a national level, Illa did not comment on the possible composition of the central Executive and expressed his confidence that Sánchez will choose “the people he believes to be most suitable for this new stage”.

Nor did he go into the frictions that have arisen between Sumar and Podemos and to what extent they could affect the formation of the government and recalled that the deputies of both formations voted in favour of Sánchez’s investiture. “That’s what I’m left with, that’s the picture”.

“Recovering fractures”.

For his part, the Secretary General of Units per Avançar, Ramon Espadaler, defended that the amnesty “is an opportunity to heal fractures, of which there are many in Catalonia, and this does not mean forgetting, but it does mean forgiveness”.

In statements on the programme ‘Converses’ on Cope Catalunya and Andorra, reported by Europa Press this Saturday, he criticised the fact that “the step forward that independence has taken by returning to the institutions” has not been valued, especially in reference to the pact between Junts and the PSOE for the investiture of Sánchez.
