THE POLITICAL SCENARIO
The PSOE and the PSC issue a joint statement in response to the pro-independence demand to link the investiture to taking steps towards a referendum on self-determination in Catalonia.
On the eve of the planned failure of the investiture of Alberto Núñez Feijóo and the start of the process for the eventual re-election of Pedro Sánchez as Prime Minister, the demands agreed on Thursday between Junts and ERC in Catalan Parliament to support the leader of the PSOE – amnesty and, above all, steps towards a referendum on self-determination – have led the socialists to put their foot down.
The socialists demand “a dialogue that serves to overcome division and not to deepen the rupture and discord”.
The PSOE and the PSC have issued a joint statement this afternoon in which they “reiterate their willingness to commit to dialogue as the only way to guarantee progress and coexistence in Catalonia”. “A dialogue that must serve to overcome division and not to deepen the rupture and discord that has generated so much sterile tension in Catalonia and the rest of Spain,” the statement said. The socialists, who reject a referendum on self-determination, warn that “no progress is possible along this path”.
“The path is one of coexistence and cohesion, understanding and economic and social progress in Catalonia and the rest of Spain, always within the Constitution,” the socialist communiqué alleges.
“In the last general elections, Catalan society in particular, and Spanish society as a whole, have widely supported a progressive government that continues the path of dialogue, agreements and harmony that began four years ago, and not to look to the worst of the past but to continue building a better future together,” the joint statement from the PSOE and the PSC emphasises.
