The PSOE candidate reiterates his refusal to facilitate a referendum in Catalonia in exchange for his investiture

The president of the government and PSOE candidate for the presidency, Pedro Sánchez, has branded the independence movement this Friday as an “outdated ideology” and has once again ruled out holding a referendum on self-determination in Catalonia in an interview with TVE.

Sánchez, specifically, has assured that in no case will he negotiate a referendum with the Catalan independence forces in exchange for eventual support for his investiture, the ACN reports.

The socialist presidential candidate has argued that a referendum goes against the “coexistence” that his government has “built” since, in his opinion, “the binary questions” of a referendum “break coexistence”, and because a self-determination referendum “has no place in the Spanish Constitution”.

Sánchez also stressed that in the last four years he has not conceded what the independence movement wanted with respect to the imprisoned leaders of the process. “The independence movement asked for amnesty, and it has not had it”, before adding that “conditional pardons” have been granted.
