It is the first time that European commissioners receive a Catalan president since 2015
The President of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, traveled to Brussels (Belgium) this Thursday to meet with European Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders, and Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton. This is the first meeting that a president of the Generalitat has with the European leadership since the pro-independence ‘procés’ began, in fact, the last head of the Catalan executive who did so was Artur Mas, in 2015.
“Catalonia is back in Europe, it is back in the European institutions”, Aragonès celebrated this Wednesday during the plenary session of Parliament, after seven years of frozen relations with the EU bodies. The head of the Catalan executive has indicated that one of his objectives since he became president was “to recover direct relations with the European institutions”, and he has congratulated himself on having achieved it.
The Minister for Foreign Action and the European Union, Meritxell Serret, and the Minister for the Economy, Natàlia Mas, have accompanied Aragonès to the meetings, who has become the first Catalan president to be received by the European Commission after seven years. In fact, neither former presidents Carles Puigdemont and Quim Torra nor high officials of their governments were received by the EU executive, a veto that has been lifted with the Republican at the head of the Generalitat.
