The leader of the Catalan Socialists, Salvador Illa, claims that demonstration of 11 September shows the disunity of Catalan society.

The first secretary of the PSC, Salvador Illa, believes that it is “more urgent than ever” to open a political dialogue in Catalonia after a Diada with “too much division”. And he insists that it should be through a round table of Catalan parties parallel to the dialogue with the Spanish government.

The Socialist has assured that the celebration of 11 September confirmed the disunity of Catalan society, especially among the pro-independence movement.

Electoral law or financing system

In an interview on TV3’s Els Matins, Illa pointed out that one of the points of consensus could be found in “an improvement in self-government”, approving, for example, a Catalan electoral law or reforming the financing system.

However, he rejects a referendum on self-determination as proposed by the President of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, during his speech for the Diada. The PSC is in favour of “voting for agreements, not ruptures”.

The PSC is committed to “voting for agreements, not ruptures”.

On the threat of the president of the ANC, Dolors Feliu, to promote a “civic list” in the next elections if they do not first agree on a roadmap to achieve independence, Salvador Illa warned that “this is not the path that Catalonia needs”.

He therefore called for “stopping the spiral of division and initiating a spiral of reunion”.

Budgets for 2023

On the other hand, he confirmed that this week his party’s spokesperson, Alícia Romero, will meet with the counsellor of Economy, Jaume Giró, to negotiate the Generalitat’s budget for 2023. And they will do so willing to “listen to the approach” of the Government and trying to be “constructive”.

The meeting between the two was agreed after the socialists sent a letter to the counsellor and agreed to meet after the Diada.
