Non-partisan and pluralist communication and debate platform

Home » Content » The pro-independence bunker in Catalonia
The bunker wants to go back to complaining, but forgets that the State - the one they live off - is also them. The bunker blames Madrid for this, just like that. Some days (especially at the end of the month), the Government of Catalonia is the State in Catalonia. Some days, the State is Madrid. And it forgets that if there is a two-way street, it is precisely that of the budgeted works. Either we normalise management in Catalonia and strip it of partisan interests or we will continue to miss trains. The bottom line is that the bunker - which lives off the treasury and splitting bills - is still in favour of the worse, the better.

Joaquín Luna, 4 June 2022

My God, not again. A report by the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce on the investments not executed in Catalonia in 2021 has been enough for the pro-independence bunker and its saintly indignation to return to the charge of how bad we are in infrastructures and how wonderful it would be -especially for some- to have an independent Catalonia.

The Chamber’s report regrets the low percentage of execution of committed investments, an anomaly that is irritating but can be rectified. The bunker blames Madrid for this, just like that. Some days (especially at the end of the month), the Government of Catalonia, the Generalitat, is the State in Catalonia. Some days, the State is Madrid. And it forgets that if there is a two-way street, it is precisely that of the budgeted works.

The bunker wants to go back to complaining, but forgets that the State – the one they live off – is also them.

What has the Generalitat done, apart from complaining, to avoid this anomaly? For more than ten years, management has been secondary in Catalonia. If one passes through Madrid, one understands what the expression ‘anar per feina’ (go to work) means in 2022. It’s funny, but that’s how it is.

The JxCat bunker does not want to look ahead (fortunately, a part of the pro-independence movement does). And it covers up its embarrassments with the resource of the works that are behind schedule – as happens in Italy, Honolulu or Segovia capital – in order to justify “rationally” the absurdity of running into the wall again.

The bunker suffers from ailments. Forget the rejection of the expansion of Barcelona airport – 1,700 million in hand, by the way, do the ducks of La Ricarda suffer from  heat? -, the institutional rudeness of the pro-Mediterranean corridor forums – which is progressing, something, of course, that is no longer of interest – or the squandering of billions of euros on line 9 of the Barcelona metro, a work that has been stopped for more than ten years, whose cost overruns advise prudence and some modesty when giving lessons on public works that never end. What a fiasco!

Either we normalise management in Catalonia and strip it of partisan interests or we will continue to miss trains. The bottom line is that the bunker – which lives off the treasury and splitting bills – is still in favour of the worse, the better.
