Pompeu Fabra University in Catalonia proposes to the board of directors that only Catalan or English be used.
The faculty of the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) has approved a motion that urges the management of this public university to express themselves in communications only in Catalan or English, so that, if successful, the use of Spanish would be prohibited, according to the ABC newspaper advanced.
The initiative, adopted by the faculty representatives by 28 votes in favour, 27 against and 13 abstentions, depends on the decision of the UPF Board of Directors, made up of the Rector and the Vice-Rectors, who may accept or estimate it in its entirety or partial.
According to ABC, in this week’s vote the management voted against that text, which suggests that the petition will not prosper.
The motion, according to the same information, specifies the series of measures that it demands from the board of directors, including one referring to the “exclusive” use of Catalan in internal communications and publications in UPF’s institutional profiles on social networks.
On the other hand, another statement from the faculty, approved by 53 votes in favour, 4 against and 4 abstentions, defends linguistic immersion in Catalan, a methodology that, according to its description, is “worldwide approved” as “one of the most effective for the preservation of languages threatened by the hegemony of the dominant languages”.
